Meet the Tīeke (Saddleback)
Say hello to the tīeke, one of Aotearoa’s most charismatic and vocal native birds. Instantly recognisable by its glossy black feathers, rich chestnut saddle, and bright orange wattles, the tīeke is known as much for its bold appearance as for its lively, musical calls.
Once widespread throughout New Zealand, the tīeke now thrives mainly on predator-free islands and carefully managed sanctuaries. Energetic and inquisitive, it spends much of its time hopping along tree trunks and forest floors, foraging for insects and fruit.
Handcrafted in Arrowtown by Jack Stobart, each tīeke is individually shaped from white porcelain and carefully glazed to reflect the bird’s distinctive markings. Every piece is handmade and entirely one of a kind.
