Meet the Tūī
The Tūī is one of Aotearoa's most iconic native birds — at first glance almost black, but in good light revealing a striking iridescent sheen of blues, greens and bronze. Its most distinctive feature is the curled tuft of white feathers at its throat, known as the poi, which gave rise to its early European nickname, the "parson bird."
Tūī are renowned for their voice — a complex, ever-changing mix of melodic notes, clicks, coughs and wheezes, made possible by a unique double voice box. Bold and territorial, they feed on nectar from native flowers, using their long curved bill to reach deep into the blooms while spreading pollen as they go, making them vital pollinators of the New Zealand bush.
Each Tūī is handcrafted in Arrowtown by Jack Stobart. Individually shaped from natural stone with carved timber and resin detailing, each piece reflects the Tūī's elegant form and distinctive throat tuft. Variations in stone and finish ensure that no two Tūī are exactly alike.
