Meet the Kea
The Kea is a large alpine parrot found in the mountainous regions of Aotearoa — the world's only true alpine parrot. Mostly olive green in colour, it has a long curved bill and flashes of bright orange-red under its wings and at the base of its tail, often revealed in flight or when exploring its surroundings.
Kea are renowned for their intelligence and curiosity, with problem-solving abilities researchers have compared to primates. Omnivorous and highly adaptable, they forage for shoots, fruits, seeds, insects and carrion, often investigating objects, people and anything new in their territory. Living in some of New Zealand's harshest alpine conditions, Kea are strong, confident fliers and natural problem-solvers — earning them the nickname "the Clown of the Alps."
Each Kea is handcrafted in Arrowtown by Jack Stobart. Individually shaped from natural stone with carved timber and resin detailing, each piece reflects the Kea's solid form and distinctive features. Variations in stone and finish ensure that no two Kea are exactly alike.
